Rajasthan’s Bhadla Solar Park now spans over 14,000 acres, generating 2.7 GW of clean electricity and powering millions of homes across northern India. The project, anchored by NTPC and private developers, has created 10,000 local jobs and drastically cut the state’s dependence on coal.
The park’s success has triggered a cascade of renewable investment across the Thar Desert. Community solar models now allow individual farmers to lease land and earn stable income while their fields generate clean energy — a model being replicated in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
India’s solar capacity crossed 70 GW in 2024, putting it on track to meet its 500 GW renewable target by 2030. For a country still home to the world’s largest unelectrified population, the desert sun is fast becoming the great equaliser.
